The Birds, released in 1963, is a suspense horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock based on the 1952 novella "The Birds" by Daphne du Maurier from her short story collection, "The Apple Tree".
The film stars Tippie Hedren, mother of Melanie Griffith, as Melanie Daniels - a role which gave her the Golden Globe award for New Star of The Year (Actress). Her co-stars were Rod Taylor, Susan Pleshette, and Jessica Tandy.
