Lillian Bassman’s early work as a textile designer and fashion illustrator preceded her career as a photographer. Initially working under the tutelage of Harper’s Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch, Bassman worked as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar from the 40’s to the early 60’s. She is known for elegant fashion images that achieve their unique, sometimes ethereal effect through manipulation in the dark room – sometimes blurring and bleaching the image.

Bassman, in her 90's, is creating a new series of work and is now uses photoshop for her image manipulation.
